Humorous Music and Silly Songs

“Current research is beginning to show that laughter may also have serious positive physiological effects for those who engage in it on a regular basis(Frates, MD et al.). This evidence proves the old saying “laughter is the best medicine” true.  That’s why comedic musicians such as Tim Hawkins, Veggie Tales, and Slugs & Bugs are so popular.

Tim Hawkins specializes in parodies of well-known songs; he rewrites these tunes in ways that sound very much like the original. Some of Hawkins’ well-known songs are “Pretty Pink Tractor,” “Chick-Fil-a,” and “A Homeschool Family.” Slugs & Bugs use an interesting point of view; the songs are sung as if by slugs and bugs, such as “Doug the Slug” and “Sparky the Lightning Bug.” A few of the most known silly songs by Slugs & Bugs are: “Tractor Tractor,” “Mexican Rhapsody,” and “Under Where?” Veggie Tales songs are well known for Larry The Cucumber singing his “Silly Songs With Larry.” Many children remember growing up with these songs. Some top “Silly Songs With Larry” are “The Hairbrush Song,” “The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything,” and “Larry’s High Silk Hat.” The songs by these artists tend to be very easy to sing along with for listeners young and old. For example, a sixteen-year-old and a thirteen-year-old were singing the Veggie Tales song “The Water Buffalo Song.” During this oration, a college student did as all good homeschool students should, she joined in—singing the part of Archibald the Asparagus.

Furthermore, these songs can add some humor to your daily activities. For instance, the song “Pajama Drama” by the band Slugs & Bugs can be used in the tragic case that one cannot find one’s pajamas; during this time, the song may bring a little humor to the sad situation. “Homeschool Blues” by Tim Hawkins voices the complaints that some homeschoolers endure. Tim Hawkins has also written a song that many people enjoy; for example, the previously mentioned song “Chick-Fil-a.” This tune explains the love many have for the fast-food restaurant, and their anguish at not being able to eat Chick-Fil-a on Sundays. Larry the Cucumber of Veggie Tales sings another song “The Hairbrush Song,” which has been recorded as sung often when a young ladies’ hairbrush goes missing.

In addition, these “silly songs” can be educational like the song “Hopperena” by Veggie Tales teaches how to dance. Another educational Veggie Tales song is “Dance of the Cucumber,” in which Larry the Cucumber sings in Spanish and Bob the Tomato translates into English. This provides an entertaining way to learn bits of another language. Tim Hawkins’ song “Banana Peeling” offers the lesson “look before you leap,” so that listeners do not have to learn the hard way and to look before they leap. Slugs & Bugs could also be classified as an educational listening experience due to their recording “The Backwards Alphabet.” Most people can say the alphabet, but few can claim they know it “backwards and forwards.”
