Meet Heidi Schoenhals: Biblical Poetry

Meet Heidi Schoenhals, clay’s new Biblical poetry columnist!

Heidi is an American, but she has lived in Thailand for most of her life.  She is 14 years old, in 9th grade, and this is her 4th year since she started TPS.  This year, Heidi is taking English 3 Intrigue and Illusion with Mrs. Thomas and Eastern Kingdoms History with Mr. Woods.  She also takes Chemistry, Algebra 2, three foreign languages, and two musical instruments through other programs.

Whenever she isn’t working on her nine classes, one might find Heidi reading, playing music, learning another language, crocheting, cooking, or solving language logic puzzles.  Her favourite book series include the Chronicles of Narnia, the Wingfeather Saga, and The Lord of the Rings.  As for music, Heidi mostly listens to worship and classical music, with a few exceptions.  Heidi plays piano (mostly from chords), recorder (mostly Baroque), cajon, guitar, violin, ukulele, and pin, a traditional instrument.  She also loves languages. Heidi speaks Thai, Isaan (similar to Lao), and English fluently, but she has also worked on Chinese, Latin, Indonesian, German, and Spanish.  Of all these, she enjoys speaking Isaan and playing recorder most.

Heidi loves poetry and the Bible, including poetry and the Bible in other languages.  She has written Thai poetry in the traditional style for seven years, starting when she went to Thai school up through fourth grade.  After that, she homeschooled and began to write poetry in English about three years ago.  Recently, Heidi has come to appreciate the poetry in the Bible, and she loves to write about Biblical themes, which she will be doing for clay for the rest of this year.

If she could choose a perfect setting, Heidi would want to be somewhere outside with a pencil, journal, bilingual Thai-English Bible, and enough time to sit in silence for a while without any interruptions.
