Autumn: The Best Things About My Favorite Time

It’s October! The weather has finally started cooling down. Cool breezes are chasing away the clouds of warmth and humidity. Or, at least, that’s how autumn begins in Batumi, Georgia. Autumn for you may begin when it rains, when you can eat certain foods, or even, depending on where you live, when the weather starts to heat up again. Continuing with the theme of last month, I wrote this poem about the “Little Things” I enjoy about autumn, and what it reminds me of. Although I like both spring and winter as well, autumn has always been my favorite season. I love wearing fall clothing such as sweaters, hoodies, trench coats, long pants, etc. During the fall you can also enjoy things like soup, tea, and blankets fully, unlike in the summer or spring. Although you can enjoy these things in the winter too, the weather is often too cold for me. Another great element about the fall is its lazy and cozy atmosphere which, though it may not help when trying to get schoolwork done, is perfect for reading. At the moment I am re-reading several books, including one of my all-time favorites, The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. Even though I cannot read as much as I would like because of school, there is nothing better than ending the day with a warm cup of milk or tea and a good book. The autumn time does, however, mean a brand new school year and many challenges ahead. So as you dive into autumn and try to get through the fall semester, I hope this poem can make your day a little bit better!

Autumn to Me

Autumn to me, means blankets and rain

Starting to wear jackets again

Autumn to me, is the cool breeze

Rustling through brown, red, and orange trees

Autumn to me, holds a nice cup of tea

Gets lost in a book, or a story

Autumn to me, smells of apple pie

With cream topping like clouds in the sky

Autumn to me, means soft warm sweaters

Fluffy socks that combat the weather

Autumn to me, is warm soups and bread

A cup of salep right before bed

Autumn to me, holds a fluffy pet tight

Gives belly rubs and kisses goodnight

Autumn to me, smells cool and fresh

Like the after-rain sent that washes away stress

So I’ll enjoy this Autumn like all those before

But try a little harder and work a little more

For Autumn for you and Autumn for me

Is a fresh and new opportunity

And as the leaves fall, and birds fly away

In each and every moment let’s try to stay

Author’s Note: Salep is a warm cinnamony milk drink I grew up drinking in Turkey. If you can find a homemade recipe for it, I’d highly recommend trying it!
