Meet Declan Miles: Guys’ Spotlight Columnist

Meet Declan Miles, this year’s guys’ spotlight columnist! This is his third year at TPS, but his first as a clay columnist! As a sixteen-year-old, Declan will be a sophomore taking English 4/5/6 this fall. Declan is getting really excited to write for clay this year!

Declan hails from Georgia, where he and his family live on a small farm, and raise cattle, chickens, and ducks. He has one younger brother, who also attends TPS. According to him, wearing lots of hats comes with the farm. A self-proclaimed terrible basketball player, he does not play any sports, but he loves to fish and hunt. Declan loves eating sandwiches, Mexican food, and chocolate cake, but will not eat Tuna. He also likes dad jokes and John Wayne movies and has been playing the guitar for almost a year. He has always been a curious person, seeking out new things to do and try every day! He loves trying new things so much that he once tried on a random pair of aviator sunglasses, decided he liked them and still has them to this day! When asked about how he would talk to his friends, he replied that he would always want to keep it lighthearted and funny!

Declan has wanted to write for clay for a while but thought he might wait a bit until his writing skills got better (with age, of course). Even though he has not thought much about life after high school, becoming a comedian has piqued his interest, and he thinks it would be a neat career. Through his love of reading, Declan has found many other professions to look exciting and a possibility for his future after high school but hasn’t quite started to narrow down his possibilities, seeing he still has a few years left before he reaches adulthood.

Declan’s favorite Bible verse is either Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go” (his inspiring one), or when people are being loud around him, Job 13:5 “If only you would be silent! That’s the wisest thing you could do” (his not so serious one).

Declan will be a fantastic addition to the venerable clay staff and will be an excellent contributor to the spotlight section this year. We are all looking forward to reading his work over the coming months!
