Meet Anna Stone: Poet Columnist

Anna Stone, this year’s poet columnist, is a fifteen-year-old poet going into her fourth year at TPS when she starts tenth grade this fall. As is fitting for a poet columnist, Anna loves to write poetry and short stories. She also hopes to write a novel someday—though if she ever finished a novel, she would not publish it. She goes back to revise her writing quite often, making it difficult for her to decide when the story is truly complete. In addition to writing, she enjoys art, particularly sketching portraits and everyday scenes as well as painting with watercolor because of the freedom watercolor gives her as a medium. She also uses alcohol markers to color her drawings. However, the hobby that she spends the most time on is watching K-Dramas and listening to K-Pop.

Anna grew up in Turkey, but she moved to the country of Georgia last year. She speaks both English and Turkish fluently and is learning Korean. She also plans on learning Russian in the future because she lives in a post-Soviet country. While Anna’s mom grew up in the United States, she is ethnically Korean, and her dad is American but grew up in Indonesia and the Philippines, making her a unique mix of cultures and ethnicities. Throughout her life, she’s visited eight different countries. She has three older brothers who are all TPS alumni and a one-year-old cockapoo dog, whose name is Petey.

This year, Anna is looking forward to growing herself through writing for clay. “Besides essays I’ve never really written anything else seriously and with a deadline,” she explained, “and I think it’ll be a good way to exercise and improve my writing skills.” Anna usually writes poems about what she’s been thinking about. When asked about how she started writing poetry, she replied, “I’ve been into songwriting ever since I was little—mostly just lyrics [since] I’m not very good with melodies—and as I put some poems in my stories, I started to experiment with it more.” This coming year as she crafts her masterpieces for clay, she hopes to share her poetry with her readers and inspire them to write some of their own.
