Open Mic: Inventing Genius by Rachel Xiao

Inventing Genius

Thunderstruck, I turned away.

What kind of person washes their hands before their face?

What kind of person brushes their teeth before bed?

What kind of person places a pillow under their head?

What kind of person walks on their feet?

These questions really have got me beat.

What kind of bed isn’t a rock?

What kind of boat isn’t a sock?

What kind of chair stands upright?

What kind of lamp gives off light?

These inventors must have hit their head.

What were these people thinking, it’s strange,

But these crazy inventions have got to change.

Change everything that’s ever been created,

Don’t call me nuts, you’ve got me underrated.

How people have accepted these things, I don’t know,

But every single thing will have to go.

How humans have survived so long, it’s a mystery,

But my inventions will go down in history.

These stupid inventors, I really must have a chat,

Because they are so dumb, to have made all that!

Now, now, why are you calling me crazy?

Don’t call me batty, moronic or lazy!

I’m just trying to play my part,

I’m being honest, it all comes from my heart!

About the Poet:

My name is Rachel Xiao, and I am currently living in Yunnan, China. I wanted to write this because I realized that people take their daily routines and belongings for granted. I hope to show people how difficult life would be if our everyday objects were flipped on their heads. Through making crazy comparisons, I aim to help everyone appreciate what they have.
