Spotlight

Selina Kim: Ballet, Phoenixes, and a Creepy Old Factory

Mercy: Alright everyone, it’s February already, can you believe it?

Selina: And this is going to be your best spotlight yet.

Mercy: Sure. So, let’s start with the basics. Age, grade, and where you live?

Selina: I’m 13, in 8th grade, and I live on Mars.

Mercy: No you don’t, you live in Istanbul.

Selina: Way to ruin the excitement. Oh wait, I’m here, the excitement can never be ruined.

Mercy: Very humble I see.

Selina: Absolutely. Humbly sarcastic.

Mercy: Anyway, this is my article and you have to give me real answers. Do you have any siblings?

Selina: Yes, Eliana is my older sister.

Mercy: Nice, what TPS classes are you taking?

Selina: English 2: Uncommon Valor.

Mercy: What a fun fact about you?

Selina: I’ve sprained my ankles sixteen times and my wrists eleven times but I’ve never broken a bone. I’m just special like that.

Mercy: Totally. If you could sum up yourself in three words what would they be?

Selina: Energetic, sassy, and absolutely and utterly fantabulous. More than three words, I know. I like to live on the edge.

Mercy: Of course you’re going to give me more than three words. Why should I even expect anything less? What are some of your talents?

Selina: Getting tired without doing anything, turning in assignments one minute before they’re due, and ballet, I suppose.

Mercy: What are some of your hobbies?

Selina: Dancing, singing, poem writing, basketball, listening to music, and annoying you. Also a talent if I do say so myself.

Joshua: (comes out of nowhere) Yep! A talent that we both have. And we excel at it.

Mercy: (mutters) Clearly.

Joshua: Wow, you are just speeding through all these questions. You have to slow down and really take in her answers.

Mercy: So you want me to take in that she loves annoying me? I think I’ve already figured that out.

Joshua: Just don’t rush.

Mercy: Anyway, if money was no object, what would you do all day?

Selina: If it was for one day, I would invest all of it so I could use it for the rest of my life and become independently wealthy. But in the spirit of the question, I’d go visit my friends around the world and buy a bunch of good food.

Mercy: What’s a fun story that’s happened in your life?

Selina: Well you see, my whole life is a funny story. “Our tragically misunderstood protagonist faces going to school in an old factory building filled with people who are all tragically misunderstood.” It would be a bestseller.

Mercy: I’m sure. Alright, list some of your favorites.

Joshua: See, right there. You’ve got to take in her answer, not just quickly go on to the next question without acknowledging the title.

Mercy: Oh, I acknowledged her answer. Her school literally looks and feels like a prison.

Selina: Because it was an old factory.

Mercy: I am very aware of that. So, moving on.

Micah: Yo.

Selina: Hi Micah. How’s it going?

Mercy: You can talk after the interview. What are some of your favorites?

Selina: Hunger Games, Chasing by NF, April, phoenixes, art, sarcasm, and bubble tea. Oh, and my favorite Wideman is…

Micah: Me, obviously. I’m everyone’s favorite.

Selina: Oh, absolutely.

Joshua: Ouch.

Mercy: All right, I’m leaving. Joshua, finish up the article and… you’re here. Of course you are.

Fred: Couldn’t miss an interview.

Mercy: You know what, why don’t you finish the article instead? I’m done.

Fred: Gladly. Alright, who’s someone you want to be like and why?

Selina: My sister. Because she’s amazing and awesome and has always been my role model. Also Mercy Wideman ‘cause why not.

Mercy: Because I’m amazing. (hair flip) Clearly.

Selina: Right, clearly.

Joshua: Sure.

Fred: You were supposed to leave.

Mercy: Nah, I’ve put up with her stubbornness enough in my life that I think I can handle a little interview.

Fred: She’s not stubborn, she’s awesome.

Mercy: Clearly you don’t know her. But I do agree she is awesome.

Joshua: Well, moving right along. What’s your favorite Bible verse?

Selina: Psalms 34:8: “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.” There’s so much to explore through God and you can always find safety in him.

Mercy: Great verse. Well, that’s about all the time we have. Anything else you want to say?

Selina: Soup.

Micah: Soup is good.

Selina: Tis’ indeed.

Mercy: Well, thanks for coming in!

Fred: Join us next time where Joshua will probably come back, and the sarcasm will never end.
