The Dreamcoat: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is an incredible musical that shares a meaningful story and is one of the world’s most famous family-friendly musicals. The entire musical is told from the perspective of the narrator, who follows the storyline of how Jacobs favorite son, Joseph, gets sold as a slave by his eleven older brothers. His older brothers were always jealous of Joseph because he never had to do the crippling work that they had to do. During his childhood Joseph had many dreams and some of his dreams came true. His ability to tell the future help him later on in life. Josephs brothers finally had enough of his dreaming ways and sell him as slave. Once Joseph was in Egypt they then convince Jacob that his favorite son has been killed by a tragic accident. As a slave in Egypt, Joseph works for the pharaoh, Potiphar, but then is imprisoned for being falsely accused of being romantically involved with Potiphar’s wife. While imprisoned, he helps interpret the dreams of his fellow inmates. Due to Josephs God-given talent, interpreting not only his dreams, but the dreams of many others, he saves Egypt from a terrible drought, and ultimately his 11 older brothers’ lives. The story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat teaches us about God, and we can learn from Joseph to always trust him. Not only does the musical teach us about God, but it teaches us about important traits such as forgiveness.  In the musical, Joseph goes through many ups and downs, but in the end, he overcomes all hardships and becomes a leader in history. This inspiring story was taken from the Bible, so it can be shared through music, dancing, and fun! 

The show was published in 1969 and has been performed hundreds of times all over the world. This award -winning show was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice and is performed often by unprofessional school groups or pro actors on Broadway. Webber and Rice are also known for writing other award-winning musicals like Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, and perhaps most famously, the Phantom of the Opera. Due to the success of the rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, in 1972 Webber and Rice wrote Joseph. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat that it has been performed in many theaters world wide. It has been performed in 80 countries even as far as Zimbabwe and Israel! 

In the live musical the music and the actors are always outstanding. The show is not only meaningful, but also extremely funny because the actors on stage often interact with people in the audience. The show is often performed by very little people, so costume changes are always impressive.
