Cheesy Chowder (For When You’re about to Be Thrown into an Adventure)

Life is not easy in Skree, especially when the dreaded Fangs of Dang have invaded the land. They hoard money, spit venom, and eat maggotloaf. It is always ill-advised to make a Fang angry. However, sometimes trouble is inevitable, such as in the case with the Igiby children, who accidentally anger a Fang named Slarb. Although they try to flee and hide from the slithery creature, the children are unfortunately caught by Slarb and other Fangs and thrown in jail. Luckily, the children’s mother manages to bail them out of jail with by bargaining with the head Fang of their town. The Igibys, scared but momentarily safe, return to their cozy cottage and to warm bowls of cheesy chowder and slices of butterbread. Only a bowl of cheesy chowder will comfort those who just barely escaped certain doom. However, the Igibys’ cheesy chowder marks the beginning of a new season for them. This seemingly normal family is about to be launched into the adventure of their lives that will reveal secrets about their family’s history they never could have dreamed to be true as they flee Gnag the Nameless and his Fangs. But, there’s nothing better than starting a new, dangerous, and exciting adventure than with a warm and scrumptious bowl of cheesy chowder.

Cheesy chowder will take 30 minutes to make and will provide 6 servings. Collect the following ingredients for this ROCK:

  • 2 cups water*
  • 2 cups diced totatoes (potatoes)
  • ½ cup diced charrots (carrots)
  • ½ cup celery
  • ¼ cup chopped onion*
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper

White Sauce

  • ½ cup butter
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1 cup cubed ham, cooked

Rolls or butter bread (optional)*

  1. Place the water, potatoes, carrots, celery, onion, salt, and pepper in a large pot and bring to a boil. Let the ingredients boil for 10-12 minutes, or until the vegetables are cooked.
  2. While the vegetables are boiling, make the white sauce. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, add the flour and stir until smooth, about 1 minute. Add milk gradually, and then cook the sauce until thick. Once thickened, remove from heat. Add the cheese and stir until melted in and combined.
  3. Add white sauce and cubed ham to vegetable mixture and stir until combined. Enjoy!

Water: An equal amount of chicken broth can be used in place of the water. Chicken broth will give the chowder more flavor.

Vegetables: Don’t feel limited to just potatoes, carrots, celery, and onions! If you don’t like an ingredient, omit it. If there’s a vegetable that you like (tomatoes, peas) and would go well with cheese, then go ahead and include it.

Bread: In the first book of The Wingfeather Saga, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, the Igiby children eat cheesy chowder butter bread. If you have a favorite butter bread or roll recipe, go ahead and make it to enjoy with your chowder!
