How to Make a Tissue Paper Jar

With school just around the corner, everyone is beginning to buy textbooks and equipment for the year, and a tissue paper jar will serve as an excellent holder for your new supplies. Erasers, rulers, pens, and pencils will fit into this pretty container decorated with colored tissue paper. To create this simple jar, the tissue paper is torn into strips to make a transparent cloud-like background or cut into petal-like shapes and arranged into flowers. However, if you don’t want to create a flower design, you could substitute the flowers for another shape. For instance, if you want a space-themed jar, you could cut out colored dots for constellations and yellow or white stars against a dark blue backdrop. Let’s get crafting!

Tools and Equipment:

  • A glass jar
  • Assorted tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Mod Podge
  • An old brush or foam brush
  • A pen

Directions:

Begin by gathering your supplies. For this project, it is best to use a jar that has a relatively smooth surface, and you will want to use a brush that you do not mind covering in glue.

Next, pick two colors of tissue paper for the backdrop of your jar, such as blue and white, and tear them into strips of different sizes.

Putting your strips aside, pick a piece of paper for your flowers and fold it into a small square. Then use the pen to draw petal-like shapes onto the paper. Try experimenting with circles, tear drops, and balloon shapes.

Cut out the shapes with a pair of scissors and put your cutouts to the side.

Now brush a layer of Mod Podge onto your jar and cover the surface of the glass with the tissue paper strips, making sure they overlap.

Once you’ve put on the backdrop, paint over the whole exterior with a thin layer of glue.

Take your petal cutouts and place them in circles of five around your jar to form flowers. Add a small piece of darker tissue paper into the middle of each flower, and then paint over them lightly with one last layer of glue.

After the glue has completely dried, add details onto your flowers and the background using a pen, and you’re finished!

Display your artwork on your desk and fill it with pens, pencils, or even paint brushes to use throughout the year!
