A Conversation with Ms. Shearon

Hailing from Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Ms. Shearon teaches English 2—Uncommon Valor and both English 3 Lit & Analysis classes. She first decided to teach at TPS because the Lord led her to live with her dad in his remaining years, and He provided the opportunity to teach for TPS, which was a real blessing.

Grace: What is your favorite thing about teaching writing?

Ms. Shearon: I enjoy interacting with the kids in class, but also I delight in watching them develop their skills. Effective writing is VERY difficult and time consuming. (Just writing in these responses to your questions will involve my reviewing and revising what I wrote more than once before I send this email back to you.) When the students work at improving this complicated skill, I delight at their progress.

Grace: How did you come to know the Lord?

Ms. Shearon: My oldest brother started going to church when I was fourteen and pestered me until I went too. (I only went to “get him off my back,” but the Lord Christ had other plans.) Then through a movie (Jaws), the pastor’s preaching, and youth group, I realized that I was a sinner needing redemption, so I asked the Lord to forgive my sins and come into my life. When I presented my testimony before the church, I amused the pastor because I said that watching the movie had me terrified of dying. The Lord used that movie to make me realize I was not ready to meet Him, so I was more receptive to the pastor’s preaching.

Grace: What is your favorite Bible verse? Why is that your favorite verse?

Ms. Shearon: I have many favorite verses, but my current life verse is Micah 7:7-8–“But as for me I will watch expectantly for the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy. Though I fall, I will rise; though I dwell in darkness, the Lord is a light for me” (NASB). I value it because it reminds me to focus on Christ and wait patiently for Him, knowing that He has an eternal plan for my good, and I can trust Him. The forces of evil may knock me down, but the Lord will raise me up. He is my champion.

Grace: What is the most memorable event in your Christian walk, besides becoming a Christian?

Ms. Shearon: I have been a Christian for some thirty-six years, so I have had many memorable events. Therefore, I will speak generally here. My most memorable events have been when the Lord has faithfully humbled me and broke me in the midst of my pride. I marvel at His faithfulness. He saved me despite the way I was, and He faithfully will not allow me to stay the way I am. He keeps pressing me forward. Christ truly is worthy of worship and praise.

Grace: Who is your favorite Christian author?

Ms. Shearon: This will be no surprise–C. S. Lewis, but also John White, who wrote the Archives of Anthropos series.

Grace: What is your favorite book of the Bible?

Ms. Shearon: Whatever one I am currently studying.

Grace: Do you prefer reading or writing?

Ms. Shearon: They rather go together. Studying the Bible will result in writing what the Lord reveals in His word, but I do more reading.

Grace: If you had to wear a t-shirt with one word on it for a year, what word would you pick?

Ms. Shearon: I would need two words—Be still.

Grace: What is your favorite children’s story?

Ms. Shearon: C. S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series.

Grace: What is the scariest thing you ever did for fun?

Ms. Shearon: Paraglide

Grace: If you had your own talk show, who would your first three guests be?

Ms. Shearon: Ken Ham, Jason Lisle, Georgia Purdom

Grace: If you were the eighth dwarf, what would your name be?

Ms. Shearon: Seeker

Grace: Would you rather have more time or more money?

Ms. Shearon: Probably time.

Grace: Would you rather speak everything on your mind, or never speak again?

Ms. Shearon: Too extreme a choice to make. There is a moment to speak and a moment to keep quiet.

Grace: Would you rather never mentally or never physically age?

Ms. Shearon: Never mentally age.

Grace: Thank you so much for your time, Ms. Shearon, and thank you for letting me feature you in clay!
