How To Make a Decorative Vase

With a few household items, anyone can create this simple yet beautiful vase, perfect for displaying fresh summer flowers. If you have extra yarn and don’t know what to do with it, this is a wonderful way to use it. The string is wound around a glass wine bottle, turning it into a new decorative vase. This craft is a great project to work on with friends as there are endless ways to design it. Instead of using only one color of yarn to cover the wine bottle, you can use multiple colors to create a striped effect, and after covering it with yarn, small fabric flowers, buttons, or ribbons can be glued on in countless designs and patterns. For a twist, the top half of the wine bottle could even be spray painted a contrasting color from the yarn. With all its fun variations, this craft makes the perfect gift for any family member or friend. Let’s get crafting!

Tools and Equipment:

  • Glue (Elmer’s glue or Mod Podge will work)
  • A cheap paintbrush to apply the glue
  • A glass wine bottle
  • One or more colors of yarn
  • Buttons, ribbons, etc. for decorating
  • A hot glue gun

Before you begin, wash the wine bottle thoroughly and remove any labels or stickers on the surface of the glass. If the sticker leaves behind any residue, rub on some oil and baking powder, wait a few minutes, rub it off, and then wash the bottle one more time.

Next, use the paintbrush to apply a thin layer of glue around the bottom edge of the bottle and wrap the yarn once around the glue. Wait a few minutes for the glue to dry before proceeding.

Wrap the yarn several times around the wine bottle. Then, push the loops down so that they fit neatly on top of each other and repeat the process until the yarn almost reaches the neck of the bottle.

Cut off the end of the string, paint some glue onto it, and press it down, securing it to the glass.

Now it’s time to decorate! Use a hot glue gun to attach buttons, ribbons, or any other materials onto your vase.

Fill your vase with fresh flowers, and you’re finished! Display your creation on a windowsill or the center of a table and use it to showcase the bright flowers of summer!

Variations:

Spray paint your bottle

Before covering your wine bottle in yarn, lightly sand the top half of the glass and spray paint it with your favorite color. Use two layers of paint and let them dry in between coats. Finish your vase off by wrapping the bottom half in yarn.

Create stripes

Pick out two or three colors of yarn cover, and starting with the first color, glue the beginning of the string to the glass. Once you wrap the bottom inch of your wine bottle, glue the end of the string down, and glue down the beginning of next color of yarn. Continue wrapping the vase with the different colors in rotation until you almost reach the neck of the bottle.

Glue button words

Cover three or four glass bottles with yarn and use a hot glue gun to attach buttons onto your vase in the shape of letters. Write one letter on each wine bottle to create words such as “home,” “love,” or “joy.”
