Open Mic: Poetry by Sofia Barbieri

Where Could I Go?

Where could I go

In darkness below,

Reaching for the light,

With all my might,

Yet not I that saves;

But through rickety caves,

In love He leads

And sows the seeds,

From weary mope

To living hope,

Into me casting,

Joy everlasting!

Music’s Wings

On music’s wings

My heart sings

To the depths of the sea

There I’ll be—

Though clouds of black

Make bleak my lack

A ray of hope

Will break my mope

Chariots golden

My heart embolden!

On music’s wings

My heart sings

Faster I spin

A swan’s kin

One far off star

Marks the bar

Yet I’ll pay no mind

For a dancer’s kind

Chariots golden

My heart embolden!

Hope Calls

As hope calls,

Tearing down walls,

A glimmer of light

Restoring my sight;

No sparkling wand

Only cross beyond.

Open your eyes,

Forsaking your sighs,

Jesus’ arms held wide

And my tears dried;

Troubles not extinguished

But bondage relinquished.

Faith, hope, and love,

Descend like a dove,

In the Spirit’s murmur

Hearts made firmer,

Trust and believe

And His peace receive.

Meet the Author

How old are you?

What is your favorite thing about writing?

This is a tough one, because I absolutely love writing, but I also can’t really help it. Even when I have so much homework that I can’t really work on my writing too much (which is kind of most of the time currently), I still end up working on it in my head to some extent, trying to figure out a story plot, find the best wording for something, or finish dreaming out a character. I also really love writing because it gives me joywords are just so beautiful, and it is truly very satisfying when I can at last find the right way to put something I’ve seen in my head. It definitely makes up for the frustration, annoyance, and discouragement when I cannot! So my favorite things about writing would probably be that it makes me happy, it gives me a place to escape to when I’m bored, and it lets me express myself and my deepest thoughts in ways I could not easily do otherwise.

  1. Elizabeth Nelson

I love this good job. I love the poems. Great job Emily and Sofia

  2. I totally agree with the favorite thing even though it isn’t a favorite thing XD. And a lot of my writing is also in my head–actually most of it probably is.

The style I see coming through from you a lot is very interesting, and something I haven’t tried that much. Especially the short line lengths; they hold a lot of power compared to more wordy structures. I’ll have to think about trying it more because good density is hard to achieve.

    Yours truly,
    Yours Truly

    • XD And, ja, probably at least half of my writing is still in my head… 🤔

Thank you! That means a lot to me, especially since I’m still comparatively pretty new to poetry. XD

  3. Omigosh Sofia! This is beautiful *wipes tear*

  4. Hi Soda!
Aww what happened to the knives part? Well maybe that was for the best.
Keep writing, and remember that God’s grace is sufficient to cover all.

    • Jojo!! Hehe, I had to take that part out… XD Because it was apparently too easily misunderstood. *sigh* I also liked it better than what I ended up putting there instead, though. 😂
Thank you, and I’ll try. *hugs*
