Girls’ Spotlight: Myla McReynolds

I push my glasses up my nose and look up as someone walks into the room. “Myla! Hello! Thank you so much for agreeing to meet with me.”

She smiles and responds. “Of course! Thank you for asking!”

I pick up my files and look back at her. “Are you ready to begin?”

She nods enthusiastically, and I scan my list of questions. “Alright, so… let’s start with this one. Where do you live?”

“I am from Austin, Texas. However, I’m living in Madagascar right now, with my four siblings.”

‘That’s awesome! Do any of your siblings take classes at TPS?”

“Yeah! Camden and Keely, my older and younger sisters, take classes here.”

“That’s great! Piggybacking off of that, what classes are you taking this year?”

“Ooooh goodness, let me see.” She tilts her head, thinking. “I’m taking French 1A, French Conversations, English, science, and math.” She checks the classes off on her fingers while she lists them, then looks up and grins.

“That sounds awesome! Which subject is your favorite, then? And…” I lean in, whispering conspiratorially, “which one do you hate the most?”

She laughs and thinks for a moment, then brightens up. “I really love science! And, well, you could definitely say that I am not overly fond of math.”

I nod sympathetically. “Math sure is… well, let’s just say I would like to sit down and have a chat with the inventor of it. Well, enough about school. So what about extracurricular activities? What are some hobbies you like to do?’

Myla grins and rubs her hands together. “Well… I am a baker, photographer, writer, singer, reader, and a basketball and soccer player.”

“Oooh, you’re a well-rounded person, I see! Do you think you would be interested in pursuing a career in any of those fields?”

She nods again. “Yes, actually! I enjoy writing, and hope to pursue a career in that area.”

“That’s really cool! You’ll do amazingly. What about your singing hobby? Who are your favorite singers?”

“Thank you! And oh…. hmm. Well, the bands I like are Imagine Dragons, Maroon 5, Surfaces, and Twenty-One Pilots. My favorite artists are Julia Micheal, Jack Vallier, Gracie Abrams, Tate McRae, AUSTIN, Marshmellow, Zendaya, Kate Vogel, Elina, Sasha Sloan, Emily Burns, Lauv, Meghan Trainor, Hailee Steinfeld, Chord Overstreet, Etham, and so many more…”

Myla continues talking enthusiastically, and I can’t help but laugh. “Oh! Those are all really good choices. Marshmellow is awesome. Hm… let’s talk about your pets! Do you have any?”

“I do, actually! My family has two dogs and two cats.” She pauses and laughs. “We’re also planning on getting a kitten very soon.”

I blink. “Oh wow, four animals.” I stop and correct myself.  “Soon to be five! Very impressive. I love cats. A pet for each sibling, then? That’s pretty cool! So… aside from taking care of a lot of animals, what would you say your biggest accomplishment is?”

Myla chews on her lip, thinks, and then lights up. “Oh, you know what? Learning the Sakalava language in Madagascar was pretty hard. It paid off well though, so I’m going to say that learning a new language has been my greatest accomplishment so far.”

“Oh wow! That certainly is impressive. Do you know any other languages?”

Myra raises an eyebrow. “Aside from English, you mean?” We both laugh. “Yeah. I’m learning French.”

I facepalm. “Of course! You mentioned French when you were discussing the classes you were taking. Silly me. Well… do you like to play games?”

“Well…” she says, “I like to play video games if that counts. I particularly enjoy Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Minecraft.”

“Ah yes, Minecraft, an old classic. An excellent game, if I do say so myself. Alright… What would you say your favorite Bible verse is?”

Myra grins enthusiastically. “2 Corinthians 4:16-18, for sure!”

I blink and wait. She stares back. I cough and prompt, “And that says…?”

She startles and laughs. “Oops! Right,” she glibly rattles off: “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

I smile. “That’s a very powerful verse and a great one to live by. Great memorization skills, by the way. Alright, we’re nearing the end, so I’ll ask you this: anything you wanna tell the readers specifically?”

Myla smiles and makes eye contact. “Yea! I’d just like to say that I have made some amazing friends in TPS and I’m so glad I met all of y’all.”

I smile and nod, then look at my wrist, which…  does not have a watch on it. Sighing, I look at the clock on the wall. “Oops! Time’s up! Thank you so much for coming in!”
