Meet clay’s cooking columnist—Joie Koo! Joie lives in Florida, near Orlando, with her three siblings and two dogs. A rising eighth grader, Joie is entering her fourth year with TPS, and she will take English 2, U.S. History for Middle School, Spanish 1A, and Life Science this year. An avid reader and movie watcher, Joie’s favorite books are the Harry Potter series, The Hobbit, A Little Princess, and the Little House series, while some of her favorite movies include the first couple Harry Potter movies and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Joie first discovered her love of working in the kitchen at a very young age when she would watch her mother cook. Her favorite style of food to both cook and eat is Chinese, but she also loves sushi. Joie normally cooks using recipes, but she hopes to continue trying to create her own dishes this year, despite previous experiments not turning out very well. Some of Joie’s favorite tasks in the kitchen, aside from eating, of course, are measuring, kneading and rolling dough, and stir frying. One of the goals she hopes to begin this school year is to work through an entire cookbook, although she is not sure how long that will take!
When Joie is not doing homework or cooking, she can be found working on a children’s book she plans to also illustrate, experimenting with polymer clay, and convincing her sister to try on the dress she made for her out of an old sheet! Additionally, Joie has been playing piano for the past seven years, and she has been taking violin lessons for about five years. Joie also enjoys traveling in the United States with her family, and if she could go anywhere outside America, she would choose to visit France. Joie prefers fall or spring out of all the seasons because winter is too cold, and summer is too hot. Her favorite school subject is English, and her favorite Bible verse is James 1:2-4, which says “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing” (ESV).
Joie prefers Harry Potter to the Lord of the Rings, although she has only seen the Lord of the Rings movies and has not read the books yet. She is not sure what her dream vacation would be, but she knows it would include hiking and exploring nature. If she could have a superpower, she would choose to be able to fly. Joie would pick a trip back in time to the pioneer days in the American West if she could time travel, and if she could have one wish it would be the ability to create wonderful dishes on her first try. In the future, Joie hopes to pursue a career in the medical field like her parents and sister.
Joie is very excited to work with clay for her first time this year to share delicious recipes with fellow students! Look out for her articles as they are sure to be full of irresistible dishes!
