Erika Yee lounges on her bed reading her favorite Shipshewana Amish mystery series and sipping Bubble Tea surrounded by her two stuffed bears and a stuffed avocado. Leaving her book, she stretches and moves to her piano to play some of her favorite songs. After a day of playing music, creating poems, and teasing and texting her friends from all across the globe, Erika didn’t think the day could get any better.
Meet Erika Yee, clay’s teacher spotlight columnist and a fourteen-year-old, introverted girl with a sarcastic sense of humor and a talent for music. Erika lives in a small neighborhood in Singapore but has visited many places, and she wants to travel more later in life. Growing up in a musical family, she started learning violin and piano at age four, flute at age ten, and has sung for as long as she can remember. She has one younger sister, likes to debate in both a political and casual way, and would travel to Africa or buy a Grand Piano if granted five thousand dollars. This will be Erika’s second year with TPS, and this year she will be found studying away in Geometry Honors, Bible Survey, English 3 Literature Analysis and Composition, Eastern Empires: History of Asia and the Middle East, and Biology Honors. Her favorite food is eggs, favorite dog is a St. Bernard, and her favorite bible verse is Psalms 16:11 because she finds comfort in the joy Christ provides.
Brown, Erika’s favorite color, comes with a very interesting story. “When I was younger I liked many different colors, and I kept switching up which one I liked best. As I entered my teens, however, I decided I needed to settle on a single color and because brown was my current favorite it has been what I call my favorite color ever since.” Erika’s greatest dislike is when people chew loudly in her ear or when they are know-it-alls and won’t admit they’re wrong, but her greatest pleasure comes in the assurance that she knows who Jesus is and that she has come to trust in Him.
