Girls’ Spotlight: Hope Berry

I sit across from me a bright-eyed blonde with an infectious smile.

“Hope Berry,” I read aloud off the information sheet. “Aged thirteen, eighth grade. So, Hope, where do you live and what classes are you taking at TPS this year?”

“San Antonio, Texas,” she replies. “I’m currently taking English 2: Literature and Composition with Mrs. Thomas, U.S. History with Mr. Crosby, and Algebra Honors with Mrs. O’Hearn!”

“Good luck with those! What’s your favorite subject?”

“Eh, it changes, but usually it’s English and Spanish. My least favorites are usually Math and History, although this year I’ve enjoyed history a lot more.”

“How many siblings do you have?”

Hope takes a deep breath. “So I have six siblings Christian, Grace, Daniel, Luke, Faith, and Shepard. Grace, Daniel, Luke, and Faith all attended TPS and Shep currently attends TPS.”

I laugh. “Wow, that’s a lot. Do you have any pets?”

“Well, we have three dogs – Jessie, Jenny, and Mac. And three fish? No, four fish which we haven’t named.”

“What’s your personality type, if you know it?”

“My Myers-Briggs type is ESFJ-T, and my enneagram type is 4 wing 3.”

“Awesome. Building on that, describe yourself in three words.”

“Ooh…loyal, competitive and conscientious!”

“List some of your favorite things. It could be anything, really.”

“Anything?” Hope thinks for a moment then laughs. “Chick-fil-a, tennis, chocolate, Altoids, prayer, and technology.”

“Do you have a favorite band, artist, or song?”

“My favorite band would have to be For King & Country, my favorite artist would be definitely Ben Rector. One does not simply pick a favorite song, but if I had to choose three they would be “Paris” by Ben Rector, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver, and “The Muffin Song” by Gregory Brothers and TomSka.”

“What is your biggest accomplishment?”

“My biggest accomplishment. Performing piano has always been super nerve-racking for me, but once I got 3rd place at a state competition! Another accomplishment of mine is completing the Lord of the Rings series… I kind of surprised myself!”

“Oh, that’s cool! Do you play any sports or instruments?”

“I did ballet, but I quit about two years ago. I play tennis now, and I’ve played piano my entire life.”

I glance over my list. “What’s a strong point and a weak point you have?”

“I’m very sensitive, which can be super bothersome to a lot of people. However, I’m also very understanding and always want to help people if they’re going through a difficult time. I offer them as much comfort and advice as possible! I’m very determined to do my best and finish everything. If I start a job, I have to finish it! But if I don’t it will bother me for a couple of weeks.”

“Oh! Okay, so what’s something you’re interested in pursuing?”

“Nursing! More specifically, working in surgery or becoming an OB/GYN.”

“Very cool. What languages do you know?”

“Languages… let’s see… I know English, and also something called “The Berry language”. Only Berrys can understand it. Unless you can understand someone when they speak really fast! But I’m also learning Spanish and can understand… some? And I hope to learn some German as well!”

“Here’s an interesting question – is there any advice you’d give your younger self?”

“Always trust in the Lord and remember He always has a plan for you and means it for good, even if it may not go as you expect.

“Ah yes, coffee is amazing. Want to leave us with a Bible verse or something?”

“That’s so hard to choose! But probably Ephesians 2:8-9: ‘For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.’ I also love Jeremiah 29:11: ‘For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD. Plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and hope.’”

“Thank you so much,” I say. “See you around!”
