Meet Darcy Frederiksen!
Darby’s love for travel took root at an early age. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and moved to Brussels, Belgium, at seven months old. Her homeschooling career began in Europe and continued when she returned to the United States at age 4. In Cincinnati, the INFJ discovered her love for the outdoors, camping, raising chickens, riding horses, playing the piano and viola, dancing ballet, and being a fun sister to her two younger siblings. At the age of 13, her travel bug was firmly established with her move to Beijing, China. Darby completed her entire homeschooling high school career in Beijing, including on-line classes, privately tutored classes, homeschool co-op, and independent work. She began studying with The Potter’s School in 2011 and has taken American History, Study Skills, College Math, Arabic, and even 6 years of French classes with TPS over the years. Darby has been blessed to serve with TPS on mission trips to Laos in 2015 and France in 2017, where she made many wonderful friendships. Her dancing in ballet and jazz flourished at the On Pointe Dance Studio in Beijing, where she performed in many shows and passed RAD dance exams with merit or distinction. She also realized her interest in studying languages like French, Chinese, and Arabic. Darby has given much of her time to volunteering at local foster homes while in China, and she’s completed the highest level in the American Heritage Girls with the Stars and Stripes Award. Her Christian faith has matured over the years, from her early profession of faith at Vacation Bible School at the age of 4, to her study, discipline, worship, and service to God now. She loves world travelling, scuba diving, cake decorating, culture observing, family hugging, people watching, and challenging herself to be adventurous and try new things. Darby graduates wearing a red-white-blue cord for the French Honor Society and a gold cord for Honors in academics and volunteering. In the fall, Darby will attend Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, as an honors student pursuing a degree in Linguistics. She hopes to study abroad, minor in dance, and serve in the community. She appreciates the President’s scholarship and the Mosaic Award from Calvin and the scholarships from the Marine Corps League and P&G. Though a bit apprehensive, Darby can’t wait to discover what good plans God has in store for this next adventure.
Favorite Bible verse:
“Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!” -1 Chronicles 16:24 ESV. I like this verse because I feel like it captures a little bit of all the aspects of God that I love best. His miracles, everlasting love, awe-inspiring might, sweet comfort, and good plans are so wonderful that I want to radiate them to all the different people that He’s created!
Advice to the younglings of TPS:
I’d advise other TPSers to get to know their teachers as much as possible. TPS teachers are wonderful, and they’re awesome resources, as well as inspirational Christian role models!
