The Art of Writing…Nope Not That Writing!

I started hand-lettering back in 2015. When I first started this new hobby, I just wanted to improve my handwriting. I wanted to give up so many times because it seemed to take a while to master this skill, although I really cannot say I mastered it now. But, I am very glad I didn’t give up and continued this hobby. Today, my handwriting hasn’t change a lot, but I acquired a really useful skill.

Lettering definitely isn’t the cheapest hobby. My hands always shake when I need to purchase new pens and paper for my next projects. However, when I look at this hobby in a long-term perspective, it is one of the best and most useful hobbies I had picked up besides writing and photography.

I usually apply hand-lettering to cards since I love and cherish receiving cards myself. Hand-lettering gives me great convenience when I need cards, but also saves me from having to buy them. I can easily make a birthday card for my friend that is one in a million! Most of the time, I look for inspirations on Pinterest and then enhance the designs with my personal style. Now, I try to make my own designs as much as possible to challenge my creativity.

Sometimes, I also combine drawing and lettering. Not only do they make a wonderful combination, but it also gives me a second chance to fix up a piece of art that I might have accidently ruined.

While people think I only make art pieces out of hand-lettering, I also write small phrases and Bible verses I like in my sketchbook just to keep for myself. And I constantly use lettering in my daily life—either for spicing up my journal, leaving a message, or just writing my school notes.

Believe it or not, some people make a lot of money through lettering! Although I haven’t started doing so (I’m planning to open a business in summer), this hobby has become more and more popular in recent years. People are selling posters with quotes on it, cards for different occasions, handwritten name cards for a formal dinner, or even mugs with letterings. So, if you have a nice handwriting or love lettering, try and sell some cards for extra savings in your piggy bank!

Other than English, I’m also plan to improve my Korean and Chinese handwriting so that I could hand letter in all three languages. I’m definitely looking forward to it.

I hope I will be able to continue cultivating this talent I received from God, bringing happiness and joy to others around, and glorifying our Lord through my small lettering.
