As is customary with this segment, the camera slowly clicks on. The videographer adjusts the lens and looks through the frame. She rolls her eyes and wipes off the lens. Dusty again. Standing in front of her, laughing, is Emma Grob, a girl with brown eyes and a beautiful smile.
Videographer: Did you know that the Amazon’s Choice Cast Iron Pan only costs $29.99? It’s rated with 4 ½ stars too!
Emma (laughing): No, I didn’t. I’ll have to look into that.
Videographer: You should! It’s quite the bargain. It only weighs about 8 pounds. It retains heat so well that your food will stay warm for a long, long time.
Emma: Thanks for the heads-up!
Videographer: So, how are you?
Emma: I’m doing pretty well! It’s pretty cold in Wilmington right now.
Videographer: Aw! Florida’s pretty hot right now. Are you ready for the interview to start?
Emma: Yep, let’s go.
Videographer: What would you say is your favorite Bible verse?
Emma: One of my favorites is Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Videographer: That’s so beautiful! I love how good God is. How long have you been doing TPS and what classes are you in?
Emma: My first class was in the summer of 2017 when I took Pre-Algebra. During the first semester, I took Study Skills. Now, I’m taking Thinking Like a Christian. My Chinese 1 class is a year-long class. I’m in eighth grade right now.
Videographer: What class is your favorite?
Emma: Probably Chinese. I really like my teacher.
Videographer: What’s one of your favorite hobbies?
Emma: Definitely reading!
Videographer: Me too! What’s one of your favorite books?
Emma: The Mysterious Benedict Society! It reminds me of my childhood. I also love Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Emma: Great…I’m so happy for you.
Videographer: What’s your favorite thing about a cast iron pan?
Emma: I don’t know. The food that comes out of it?
Emma (laughing): That’s one of its best qualities.
Videographer: If you could hang out with any Biblical person ever, who would you hang out with?
Emma: Job, probably.
Videographer: That’s so interesting. Why is that?
Emma: I have so many questions. He reminds me of me, but my problems are on a lesser scale, if that makes sense.
Videographer: I completely understand that. I love Job too. I’m not sure who I would meet if I could meet someone Biblical. However, I would love to meet the inventors of the cast iron pan and just thank them.
Emma: Wow! You’re a bit obsessed.
Emma: Ella. Because it’s not a super common name and I really like it.
Videographer: That’s so pretty, I love it! Here are some rapid-fire questions. Are you ready?
Videographer: Coffee or tea?
Videographer: Dogs or cats?
Emma: Dogs. Even though I have two cats.
Videographer: What’s your favorite type of berry?
Videographer: If you could be a writing partner with any writer in the world, who would you choose?
Emma: Louisa May Alcott.
Videographer: If you could erase one of the 50 states, which one would you erase?
Videographer: Okay! If you could choose a weapon for a battle, would you prefer to have a cast iron pan or a spatula?
Videographer: Amazing! If you were a salad, what dressing would you have?
Emma: I would have ranch dressing.
Videographer: If you dress like a cowboy, are you ranch dressing? Get it?
Emma (grimacing): That’s…great.
Videographer (coughs): Um, anyway, what would you do if you found a penguin? Would you keep it? If so, where would you keep the penguin?
Emma: Well, my family has a mini fridge, so if the penguin was able to fit there, I would put him in there. Otherwise, I would put him in a bin with cold water or something, and then turn the air conditioner on.
Videographer: That’s a great answer. I think I would keep the penguin too. Last question: if you were a character from Star Wars, who would you be?
Emma: Chewbacca. He’s so funny!
Videographer: Haha, I love Chewie! He’s the best. I wish that they added a character in Star Wars who was a cast iron pan. I feel like he or she would truly be the best Jedi (or Sith) of them all. Well, thank you so much for talking with me! I hope you have a great rest of your day.
Emma: You too!
