Born and raised in Indonesia, Madelaine Setiawan joined Social Media staff for Clay Magazine this school year. She lives with her parents, older sister, and younger brother, along with their mini Pomeranian, Dollar. Madelaine attended a private school for ten years before deciding to move on to something different. Since her English teacher at the private school is also a teacher at TPS, Madelaine decided to try out TPS. When she came to this online school she found clay‘s predecessor, The Cracked Pot, fell in love with the idea of practicing her writing on the online newspaper, and decided to apply for a position. She wrote for the Alumnus Spotlight Column. This year she will work in Public Relations by managing Clay’s Instagram as well as taking pictures to post. After high school, she plans to attend college in the United States or Australia to study journalism.
In her free time, Madelaine enjoys reading, writing, playing piano, watching movies or TV shows, and hanging out with friends. A few books that have shaped her include Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and the Bible. She loves to write and has completed the novel writing challenge, NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). She also enjoys playing pop and classical pieces on the piano. As for movies, her favorite is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. She enjoys watching the TV shows Sherlock, Gilmore Girls, Stranger Things, Gossip Girl, and The Walking Dead. Some other fandoms she loves are Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Narina, and Star Wars. Of all the fictional characters, she relates most to Rory Gilmore from Gilmore Girls and her favorite Disney character is Simba. Madelaine’s preferred travel destination is Rome because of its history, but she has also always wanted to visit the United States. Her favorite food is pizza, she cannot stand watermelon or worms, and darkness scares her the most.
Madelaine’s advice for new TPSers is to do your homework! Other than English, Madelaine speaks Indonesian and some Mandarin; she has always wanted to learn German. Isaiah 41:10 is her favorite Bible verse because it “reminds us all that we should not fear and nothing can happen because He is Lord.” “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
